Food for the Gods

According to Hindu mythology, there are 330 million Gods in existence… Every household and temple prays to their favourite ones and the gods and goddesses are appeased daily with offerings of fruits, flowers, sweets and incense… These little coloured sugar discs are called Batashas and at the very least, even in the poorest of houses are offered with a glass of water at the family deity’s altar…Visitors to temples both hand these in as offerings and are handed these back as “prashad” or food blessed by the Divine. As a child, I remember my mum placing two white ( she thought the coloured ones were toxic!) Batashas in a little silver bowl every afternoon after her bath, along with a few pieces of freshly cut fruit at the family altar… Once the prayers were over we were allowed to pick up the slightly melted batasha that had oozed its sweetness on the fruit and pop it into our mouths… These days my mum uses only fruit and I offer almonds … The gods must be getting healthier in our households .. However walking on the streets, I saw rows of shops selling these for visitors to the local temple….I was quite tempted to buy a bag and munch my way through but then my inner child was restrained and the very adult me, satisfied myself with just the picture…
